Reconnecting The Family

Pans clatter and cutlery clinks as the harvest table is set for dinner. Finally, everyone takes their place; finally, the entire family is together, in the same room, at the same time for the first time in what — four, five days? Passing dishes, filling glasses, everyone talks at once. A reaching hand. A quip. A retort. Around this splendid old table, there is time to catch up on the week’s events and share plans for next week. Looking around, it dawns: the heroic effort of packing the car, corralling the kids and battling the Friday traffic to get here really is worthwhile.

This moment matters.

Leaving The City Behind

Steaming hot water, whether from the soothing rain of a shower or tumbling from an antique tub filler has such a restorative effect on all the senses.

A Recipe for Renewal:

Allow the water to fill almost to the rim of a deep soaking tub.  Add aromatic bath salts reminiscent of the ocean…watch as they tint the water such a pleasing shade of aquamarine.  Dip in a toe first, and then, slowly, a foot.  Eventually immersing your whole body in warm, scented water.  Taking a deep breath and upon exhaling, feel the city – with all its stress and schedules and obligations – wash away.

Savouring The Silence

It’s the moment you’ve waited for all week.

Arriving to the cottage, hearing the gravel crunch under your feet as walk to the door.  Leaving your bags at the door and the groceries unpacked on the counter…passing by it all on your way to your own Room with a View.

Surrounded by rocks and trees, hearing the lake gently lapping against the rocky surround beyond, loons calling in the distance.  You light candles in anticipation of the approaching night sky.  Sitting back, breathing in fresh, pine-scented air, you reach for your glass of wine.

Your friends will soon arrive, but this moment is all yours.

Building The Fire

The techniques vary, but the recipe is always the same: nestle kindling with birch bark or paper curls to catch the spark, then layer larger sticks then small logs, leaving plenty of space for air.

The flare of the match, the small flame — will it take? — tentative at first, encouraged by a whisper of breath. The slow, steady build until the logs are engulfed and the satisfying crackle of a fire intent on doing its job. Whether it’s the granite fireplace in the family room or the lakeside fire pit, everyone gathers round, faces aglow, drawn to the light, to the warmth and companionship.  Games are played, stories are told, songs sung, marshmallows toasted.  Evening becomes night, ending only when yawns can no longer be stifled and embers outnumber the flames.
